Despite a failed saving throw at Paramount+, Hasbro is attempting to revive its live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series – and one of the busiest men in Hollywood is assisting them in this endeavor.

According to Deadline, Shawn Levy–following the success of his recent film, Dead-Fool & Wolverine, and pending rumors that his long-stalled Star Wars project may receive an unexpected push to the top of Lucasfilm’s priorities if it secures Ryan Gosling as a leading man–will serve as the executive producer for The Forgotten Realms series at Netflix. Drew Crevello, a writer and showrunner from WeCrashed, will also join Levy as a co-executive producer and has already written a pilot for the series. Setting the stage for this highly anticipated adaptation is the fantasy world of Dungeons & Dragons, encompassing the vast realms of Faerûn, including the Sword Coast, the Underdark, and iconic cities such as Neverwinter, Baldur’s Gate, Candlekeep, and Icewind Dale, among many others.

Hasbro Revives Live-Action Dungeons & Dragons TV Series with Netflix and Shawn Levy

Despite a failed saving throw at Paramount+, Hasbro is attempting to revive its live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series – and one of the busiest men in Hollywood is assisting them in this endeavor.

The Creative Team Behind The Forgotten Realms

According to Deadline, Shawn Levy–following the success of his recent film, DeadAwareness & Wolverine, and pending rumors that his long-stalled Star Wars project may receive an unexpected push to the top of Lucasfilm’s priorities if it secures Ryan Gosling as a leading man–will serve as the executive producer for The Forgotten Realms series at Netflix.

Drew Crevello, a writer and showrunner from WeCrashed, will also join Levy as a co-executive producer and has already written a pilot for the series.

The Fantasy World of Dungeons & Dragons

The Previous Attempts

The opening to 2023’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (although not gaining a “firing salvo” in box office terms), precipitated Hasbro’s commitment to adapting the popular franchise to the small screen.

Announced in tandem with Wizards of the Coast experiencing the repercussions of a discordant Open Game License, Red Notice’s Rawson Marshall Thurber was enlisted to oversee the series, with Crevello joining forces with Thurber as part of the team, but ultimately ceased in its tracks as a result of shifting priorities and the sale of Wolf (formerly eOne) to Lionsgate, inflicting mortal blows to the production’s chances of survival.

A New Iteration

Domination by Paramount is relinquished henceforth, paving the way for a brand new iteration of The Forgotten Realms series rather than any nascent, manage-less work already pursued by the studios.

This change means that the series will no longer be a continuation of anything previously attempted, leaving fans to hold onto the hope that one day, a party of stars will gather and venture forth again.

The Future of Dungeons & Dragons on Netflix

The recall for continuity comes at a promising time, as Netflix is set to unveil more plans for its Dungeons & Dragons universe, which would fit nicely with its existing project, the animated Magic: The Gathering series from Star Trek: Picard’s Terry Matalas.

Stay tuned for further updates on Netflix’s plans for Dungeons & Dragons as and when information becomes available.
