Aside from a Days Gone remaster, Sony’s first State of Play showcase of 2025 was somewhat lacking in first-party games. However, things took an interesting turn at the end.

The company announced the anticipated sequel from Returnal developer Housemarque, titled Saros. This new game is a third-person action title that boasts impressive visuals and an intriguing storyline.

The protagonist, played by the talented Rahul Kohli as Arjun Devraj, “searches for answers in a lost off-world colony,” according to the YouTube description.

The trailer begins with Arjun awakening on a beach with a gun by his side. His statement, “Every time the sun dies, madness reigns,” hints at the colossal challenge ahead, followed by an ominous eclipse. Subsequently, a massive creature emerges, with eight arms and a broken headpiece. As the creature summons flames with its hands, Arjun readies himself for battle.

Returns from this first installment, building on the undeniable roguelite influences of Returnal, Saros is uniquely characterized by persistence through multiple runs. Resources and progression continue after each death in this game. Observing the words “After every death, I always come back stronger” in the trailer made it clear enough. In Saros, you’ll have an evolving set of upgraded weapons and suit upgrades, which could aid you in enhancing your loadout. Yet, one should note that each run that Saros undergoes changes the world, much like in the previous Returnal installment.

One notable difference between Saros and Housemarque’s previous first-party creation is the presence of additional characters on this desolate planet. The ensemble cast’s storyline, along with key gameplay elements, will be revealed in due time.

Considering Sony’s appreciation for Returnal—the company went so far as to buy Housemarque and create the new title PlayStation Studios asset—there’s bound to be high expectations generated by this new installment. Saros is scheduled for a PS5 release in 2026.
