Brian Quintenz, the leading policy figure for Andreessen Horowitz’s crypto team, has been tapped to head the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), according to a recent announcement from his Twitter account.

About the CFTC and Its Role

The CFTC regulates the trading of commodity futures, options, and swaps, collectively known as derivatives. It is also involved in enforcing regulations that impact the cryptocurrency market.

Quintenz’s Background and Experience

Quintenz previously served as a commissioner for the CFTC during the first Trump administration, as per his profile on a16z. Prior to that, he founded the investment firm Saeculum Capital Management.

He joined a16z in 2021 as an advisory partner before becoming head of policy for its crypto arm.

Brian Armstrong, the co-founder and CEO of Coinbase, who reportedly met with President Trump to discuss staff appointments, posted a welcome message on Twitter on behalf of Quintenz.

Quintenz’s pending appointment comes at a time when the CFTC has been embroiled in controversy. The acting chair, Caroline Pham, recently removed the head of HR, and the agency released a statement that made allegations against this person. This was followed by reports of internal investigations at the agency.

Quintenz is the latest addition to the White House from a16z. The firm has become increasingly intertwined with the Trump administration. Co-founder Marc Andreessen, an ardent Trump supporter, is reportedly helping with government staff recruitment.
