Warner Bros.’ Video Game Division Faces a Thinning Slate

Only two months into 2025, and Warner Bros.’ video game output has been underwhelming. Both Suicide Squad and MultiVersus are now complete, and the studios within the company have been operating in a state of uncertainty.

A recent Bloomberg report delves into the troubles plaguing the video game division, which was led by the recently departed president David Haddad. Developers have spoken out about the challenges they faced in getting answers from Haddad or his team, and that the entire game division lacked a clear direction, chasing trends rather than focusing on quality.

This lack of direction is evident in the development of Suicide Squad and Gotham Knights. Both games were created as live-service titles, despite Rocksteady and WB Games Montreal not having experience in developing these types of games. The decision to pursue live-service games was influenced by the popularity of this genre, rather than a genuine passion for it.

Gotham Knights was initially conceived as a live-service Batman game, following the success of Gotham Knights. However, the game’s launch was met with criticism, and the pitch to rework the game was rejected. As a result, Montreal pitched two separate projects based on Constantine and the Flash, but the first was rejected in favor of a more recognizable character, leading to the development of the Flash game.

In other news, the Wonder Woman game, developed by Monolith, has undergone significant changes. The game was initially a live-service title, but it has since been rebooted and is now being developed as a more conventional action-adventure game. The game’s status remains uncertain, with reports suggesting that it may be years away from release.

Meanwhile, Rocksteady has returned to its roots with a new single-player Batman game. However, the release date remains uncertain, with WB looking to balance its release slate with other titles, including a Hogwarts Legacy sequel from Avalanche Software and a potential Game of Thrones project from WB Games Montreal.

Despite the challenges facing the video game division, Warner Bros. is committed to the medium for the long-term. However, the question remains whether the audience will continue to give them chances.
