Concerns Over U.K. Government’s Decision to Appoint Former Amazon Executive as Chair of Competition and Markets Authority

A coalition of organizations and individuals have signed an open letter expressing concern at the U.K. government’s decision to appoint a former Amazon executive as chair of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

The Coalition’s Concerns

The group, which includes U.S. tech outfits such as Yelp, DuckDuckGo, and Mozilla, says that the CMA must be "free from political pressure" if it’s to keep Big Tech in check and "unlock positive economic outcomes for the whole economy."

Background on the CMA’s Investigation of Big Tech

For context, the U.K.’s antitrust regulator has investigated Big Tech for its dominance in the market. The CMA has slapped Google with an antitrust investigation for its 90-market-share dominance in search.
