Hasbro and Legendary Entertainment Partner to Bring Magic: The Gathering to the Big Screen

Hasbro, the toy maker behind some of the world’s most iconic brands, has announced a new partnership with Legendary Entertainment to develop a live-action Magic: The Gathering movie. This move marks the latest attempt by Hasbro to bring one of its beloved games to the big screen, following the success of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

A Perfect Match

According to Hasbro’s head of film, Zev Foreman, the partnership between Hasbro and Legendary Entertainment is an "exciting and complementary" one, uniting two powerful brands to create a new and exciting universe. Magic: The Gathering has inspired decades of epic world-building and creative storytelling, making it a perfect match for Legendary’s diversified approach to marquee IP.

Plans for the Partnership

The partnership will begin with a live-action Magic: The Gathering movie, but has the potential to expand to live-action television series and other content should things go well. However, little is known about how Legendary will approach adapting Magic: The Gathering, with questions surrounding whether the movie will be meta about the act of playing the game or follow notable Magic: The Gathering characters as they sling spells and face grand threats.

No Impact on Existing Deals

The partnership does not change the deal Hasbro has already established with Netflix, where it is developing an animated Magic: The Gathering series with Star Trek: Picard’s Terry Matalas. This news comes on the heels of Legendary Entertainment’s recent involvement in other Netflix projects, including the live-action Mobile Suit Gundam movie.
