Microsoft Outage: RBI Clarifies on Impact to Banks and NBFCs
Microsoft announced that its cloud services outage in the Central U.S. region had been resolved, following a disruption that grounded and canceled several flights.
Low-cost carriers, including Frontier Airlines, a unit of Frontier Group Holdings, SunCountry, and Allegiant, reported outages that affected their operations. Frontier stated that it was resuming normal operations, and the ground stop had been lifted.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced that the department was monitoring the flight cancellation and delay issues at Frontier, adding that the agency would hold the company and all other airlines responsible for meeting the needs of passengers.
Frontier attributed the disruption to a “major Microsoft technical outage” that temporarily affected its operations. SunCountry stated that a third-party vendor affected its booking and check-in facilities, without naming the company. Allegiant reported that its website was unavailable due to the Microsoft Azure issue.
According to data tracker FlightAware, Frontier canceled 147 flights on Thursday and delayed 212 others. Allegiant experienced a 45% delay in its aircraft, while Sun Country delayed 23% of its flights.
Microsoft stated that its outage began at approximately 6 pm ET on Thursday, affecting a subset of its customers with issues related to multiple Azure services in the Central U.S. region. Azure is a cloud computing platform that provides services for building, deploying, and managing applications and services. Separately, Microsoft announced that it was investigating an issue impacting various Microsoft 365 apps and services.
