Microsoft is Eliminating the VPN Offered through Microsoft Defender

As reported by , Microsoft has announced that it will be discontinuing the VPN offered through Microsoft Defender, effective February 28. The company has updated its support page for privacy protection, its built-in VPN, to notify users of this change.

The VPN was previously bundled with Microsoft Defender, which is available to anyone with a personal or family Microsoft 365 subscription. It offered private browsing by routing internet traffic through Microsoft servers, up to a monthly data limit of 50GB. This feature was designed to provide users with an additional layer of security and protection when browsing the internet.

In a statement about the decision, Microsoft explained that its goal is to ensure users and their families remain safer online. The company stated, “Our goal is to ensure you, and your family remain safer online. We routinely evaluate the usage and effectiveness of our features. As such, we are removing the privacy protection feature and will invest in new areas that will better align to customer needs.”

Android users may still see the Microsoft Defender VPN profile in their settings after the expiration date, and will need to remove it manually if they wish to do so. However, Windows, iOS, and macOS users do not need to take any action, as the feature will be automatically removed.

It’s worth noting that this is the only feature that Microsoft is eliminating at this time. The company has stated that device protection and identity theft and credit monitoring (US) features will continue to be available.
