As Warner Bros. Discovery basks in the success of DC Studios’ Superman, the real beneficiaries of the film’s blockbuster weekend may have more in common with Krypto, the Superdog who stole the show.

According to the dog-training app Woofz, the cinematic sensation has spurred a significant surge in pet adoption interest, with Google searches for “adopt a dog near me” skyrocketing by 513% and “rescue dog adoption near me” increasing by 163% in the days following the film’s opening weekend. The breed of Krypto, a shnauzer and terrier mix, also appears to have influenced the searches, with “adopt a schnauzer” experiencing a 299% increase. This is hardly surprising, given that James Gunn’s rescue dog, Ozu, was the inspiration behind Krypto.

In the movie, Superman (played by David Corenswet) refers to Krypto as a “foster situation,” a sentiment that takes on a deeper meaning as the film unfolds and the duo saves each other from certain doom. This theme of love and devotion to all living beings is at the heart of the film, and Krypto embodies it perfectly. As any shelter pet parent can attest, the phrase “who rescued who?” is a profound understatement.

Woofz’ CEO, Natalia Shahmetova, emphasized the importance of responsible pet adoption in a statement to The Wrap, saying, “Adoption is a real commitment. The initial excitement may wear off, but your dog will remain a part of your life, so it’s essential to ensure you’re prepared to provide the necessary time, care, and training they require and deserve.”

James Gunn took to Instagram to express his thoughts on the news, saying, “This film has brought me numerous blessings, and this may be the greatest one. Although Ozu is unaware of the impact he’s had, I’m sure he’d be proud if he knew.”
