Samsung’s New Patent for High-Res Earphones with UWB

Samsung is working on setting a new standard in the wireless earphones market, as it has filed a new patent for earphones that transmit audio via Ultra Wide-Band (UWB).

Up to date, almost all wireless earphones rely on Bluetooth for audio transmission, but there have been a few devices coupled with 2.45GHz wireless connections over the years. Now the Korean giant is also looking forward to investigating Ultra Wide-Band (UWB) for wireless earphones. According to a report from 91mobiles, Samsung has filed a new patent for wirelessly transmitting audio between a device and wireless earphones via UWB.

Patent Details

The patent published through the US Patent and Trade Office reveals that Bluetooth is still mandatory to establish a connection between the host device and the first earphone. However, the first earphone then switches to a UWB connection, followed by the second earphone, and the audio transmission then takes place through UWB too.

Benefits of UWB Audio Transmission

The UWB audio transmission will offer reduced interference and latency compared to Bluetooth and will also enable high-speed data transmission and reduce power consumption. Currently, UWB is mainly used in premium smartphones, trackers, AirPods, and a few smartwatches for things such as device tracking and access control. However, it seems that the widespread adoption could be a tough task since UWB is often absent even in higher-priced phones such as the Pixel 9 and Galaxy S25.

Future of UWB Earphones

Noticeably, it can’t be predicted whether the newly filed patent will become a commercial reality.
