The Peacock and A24 series Crystal Lake is finally moving forward after experiencing previous troubles. Linda Cardellini has been cast as Pamela Voorhees, the mother of Jason Voorhees, in the show. However, fans of the Friday the 13th franchise are still eagerly awaiting the return of Jason to the big screen. The rights to the franchise have been tangled in a legal dispute for years, with Sean S. Cunningham, the director and producer of the 1980 original, suggesting that a new Friday the 13th movie is still a distant possibility.
Although this seems to be the case, the first major announcement from the “Jason Universe” is set to revive the iconic character, albeit not in the way fans might have hoped. The “Jason Universe,” created by Horror, Inc., the original owners of the Friday the 13th film franchise, aims to encompass a wide range of platforms, including entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise, and more. Notably, “movies” were not included in this list. Therefore, fans might be pleased to know that they will be getting a film of sorts: Sweet Revenge, a “short-form vignette” directed by Mike P. Nelson.
Sweet Revenge is being touted as the centerpiece of the franchise’s 45th-anniversary campaign, according to a press release. Production on the vignette began this month, and fans will be able to watch it on the Jason Universe YouTube channel and a dedicated microsite hosted by Angry Orchard Hard Cider. The latter is sponsoring the vignette as part of a larger collaboration with Horror Inc.’s Jason Universe, which will continue to roll out for fans later this summer.
Mike P. Nelson is a suitable choice to direct a new entry in the Friday the 13th series, having successfully breathed new life into the Wrong Turn franchise. However, the commercial aspect of this project is somewhat off-putting, particularly with quotes like the one from Matt Withington, senior director of marketing at Angry Orchard: “Angry Orchard fans love bold, unexpected entertainment—especially horror—so this partnership just made sense. It’s a perfect way to celebrate 45 years of an iconic franchise while creating new experiences for our drinkers in a space that they are already passionate about. We can’t wait to continue to bring the partnership to life this year.”
While it is understandable that funding is necessary to support Sweet Revenge, the involvement of Angry Orchard feels somewhat misplaced. At the very least, the company claims to appreciate horror and its fans. The extent of product placement in Sweet Revenge remains to be seen, but it is likely that some level of promotion will be present.
For Friday the 13th fans, the news of Sweet Revenge may be a mixed bag. While it is exciting to see Jason return in any form, the commercialization of the project may be a turn-off for some.
