Introduction to Nintendo’s Gamepads

For as long as I can remember, Nintendo’s gamepads have played a significant role in my life. The original NES controller, despite being unergonomic, sparked my interest in gaming and gadgets. The SNES’s rounded gamepad is iconic and has influenced the design of most modern controllers. Although I wasn’t fond of the Nintendo 64’s triple-armed controller, the Gamecube’s quirky controller was fantastic, especially with the wireless WaveBird. While the Wiimote and Wii U tablet didn’t impress me, I appreciate Nintendo’s willingness to experiment.

The Switch 2 Pro Controller: A Dream to Play With

The Switch 2 Pro Controller is, in my opinion, the best gamepad Nintendo has ever made. It feels luxurious and ergonomic, with smooth joysticks and excellent button feedback. Compared to the original Switch Pro controller, which felt cheap and plasticky, the Switch 2 Pro is a significant upgrade. The addition of two rear buttons that can be quickly programmed in any game is a nice touch, and the 3.5mm jack for wired headphones is a welcome feature.

Pricing and Technical Disappointments

However, the Switch 2 Pro Controller is not without its flaws. At $85, it’s pricey, especially when compared to 8Bitdo’s excellent Ultimate wireless controller, which costs $50 and offers more features, including Hall effect joysticks that are resistant to drifting. Nintendo’s decision to stick with the same joystick mechanism as the Switch 1’s accessories is disappointing, and I can only hope that it won’t drift over time.

Performance and Customization

Despite its flaws, the Switch 2 Pro Controller is a joy to play with. It improved my performance in Mario Kart World, and I was able to play for hours without experiencing pain or discomfort. The D-pad is comfortable to use, and the face buttons are easy to access. The rear GL and GR buttons can be remapped instantly, making it easier to perform actions without moving your thumbs away from the joysticks. You can also remap all the buttons from the Switch 2’s accessibility menu.

Battery Life and Conclusion

After around 10 hours of playing various games, the Switch 2 Pro Controller’s battery fell to 82%. Nintendo claims it can last up to 40 hours, which seems plausible based on my experience. While the Switch 2 Pro Controller is an extravagance at $85, it’s one of the best gamepads available today. If you’re a dedicated Nintendo fan or prefer first-party controllers, it’s worth considering, despite the high price.
