SK Hynix Surpasses Samsung in Quarterly Profit for the First Time

Quarterly Earnings Report

According to the quarterly earnings report, SK Hynix posted a record 8.08 trillion won (US$5.62 billion) in operating profit for the October-December period, which is 15 percent from a year earlier. On the comparison side, Samsung Electronics estimated its fourth-quarter operating profit at 6.5 trillion won, including some 3 trillion won from the semiconductor division; however, its final & exact earnings results are yet to be disclosed.

Market Performance

The data showcases that SK Hynix has outperformed Samsung Electronics, whose various businesses extend to home appliances, mobile devices, and semiconductors, in quarterly operating profit.

Historical Performance

Noticeably, last year, SK Hynix’s annual operating profit totaled a record 23.47 trillion won, and Samsung’s chip division is forecast to earn around 15 trillion won. SK Hynix has control over the HBM market since it started offering its HBM to Nvidia Corp., whose graphic processing units (GPUs) are critical for AI computing.

Current Market Position

Currently, SK Hynix is leading the HBM market as it supplies almost exclusively to Nvidia and expects to continue this lead and recent development of 16-layer HBM3E chips and looks forward to HBM4 mass production in 2025 to further solidify its market position.
