Introduction to the Controversy

President Donald Trump has commented on a now-deleted Instagram post by former FBI Director James Comey, which some of Trump’s supporters believe was a veiled death threat. Although Trump did not directly call for Comey’s prosecution, he implied it using his characteristic mafia-style language.

Trump’s Statement

In a clip aired on Fox News, Trump stated, "A child knows what that meant. If you’re the FBI director and you don’t know what that meant, that meant assassination. And it says it loud and clear." Trump was referring to a photo posted by Comey on Instagram, which featured seashells arranged to spell out "86 47," a possible reference to Trump as the 47th president. The number 86 can mean "to expel or remove" in the restaurant industry, but it can also imply "to kill" in other contexts.

Investigation and Reactions

Comey deleted the post and clarified that he opposed violence of any kind. However, top officials in the Trump administration, including FBI Director Kash Patel and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, announced that there would be an investigation. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard even suggested that Comey should be imprisoned.

Trump’s Interview with Bret Baier

During an interview with Bret Baier, Trump commented on the controversy, stating that Comey only deleted the post because he was "hit hard" over it. Trump claimed that Comey was competent enough to know what the post meant and that he did it for a reason. When Baier mentioned that Comey apologized and said he wasn’t calling for violence, Trump responded that Comey only apologized because he was "hit" and called him a "very bad person."

Potential Consequences

Trump referred to Pam Bondi, the Attorney General, when asked what he wanted to see happen, stating that it was up to her and other great people to decide. He described Comey as a "dirty cop" and implied that he should face consequences. Reading between the lines, it’s clear that Trump wants Comey to be punished, but he’s leaving it up to his officials to decide.

Tulsi Gabbard’s Statement

Tulsi Gabbard appeared on Jesse Watters’s show and stated that she thinks Comey should be locked up, citing concerns for the president’s life. She believes that Comey should be held accountable and put behind bars for his post.

Background and Implications

Comey was appointed FBI Director in 2013 by President Barack Obama and was fired by President Trump in 2017. Trump has been successful in labeling the investigations into his campaign’s contacts with the Russian government as the "Russia Hoax," despite extensive connections. It’s a crime to call for the death of the president, but Comey claims he wasn’t doing so, and his post is likely constitutionally protected speech.

Possible Outcome

The question remains whether the Trump regime will arrest Comey and test the theory in court. Even if they lose, Trump’s government may still do whatever they want, as seen in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongly deported to El Salvador. Trump has also suggested sending American citizens to El Salvador’s torture prison, making it possible that Comey could face severe consequences, including being sent to an overseas prison with no recourse.
