Introduction to Google I/O 2025 and The Android Show: I/O Edition
Google’s annual I/O developer conference is scheduled to take place on May 20, and for the first time, there are two major events that will provide updates on the company’s software platforms. I/O 2025 kicks off on May 20, and a week earlier, on May 13, The Android Show: I/O Edition will be held, focusing on the Android ecosystem.
The Android Show: I/O Edition Details
The Android Show: I/O Edition will air on May 13 at 1PM ET / 10AM PT and can be streamed live on Google’s Android YouTube channel. Since the event appears to be pre-recorded, it has been embedded below for convenient access. Additionally, Engadget will be liveblogging alongside the show, providing real-time coverage, analysis, and insights.
Expected Updates for Android 16
Android is developed partially in! the open, offering some indications of what to expect with Android 16. So far, leaks suggest a visual redesign of core features like the notification shade, a feature similar to Apple’s Live Activities for tracking ongoing events, and possibly a Samsung DeX-like "Desktop Mode" for Android phones. Google also accidentally published a blog post detailing its research on user interfaces and Material 3 Expressive, which was quickly taken down. However, the internet never forgets, and the information remains accessible.
I/O 2025 Keynote and Expected Announcements
I/O 2025 starts on May 20 at 1PM ET / 10AM PT with Google’s keynote, which typically covers updates on Android, Search, Google Workspace, and Gemini. Although Google usually doesn’t dedicate separate time for Android announcements, the company has confirmed that some Android news will be shared at I/O. It is expected that Gemini will be the main focus, with updates on Gemini, Android XR news, and possibly further demonstrations of experimental projects like Project Astra.
Watching the Events
The Google I/O keynote will be available to watch on Google’s YouTube channel and on this page once the livestream is up on May 20 at 1PM ET.
