Gears of War Franchise Expansion
Yet another prominent Xbox franchise is making its way to PlayStation. Although Halo has not made the transition yet, Gears of War is set to join the ranks of other notable Xbox titles, such as Forza Horizon 5, in crossing over to the PlayStation platform. Gears of War: Reloaded, a remastered version of the original 2006 game, will be available on PS5, PC (via the Xbox PC app and Steam), and Xbox Series X/S on August 26. However, it will not be released on the Nintendo Switch 2 at this time.
Game Availability and Features
The game will be priced at $40, and it will also be included in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on its release date. Players who purchased the digital version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition before the remaster announcement will receive a free upgrade. Additionally, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will be able to access the game through Xbox Cloud Gaming. The remastered game includes all the original Gears of War DLC at no extra cost, featuring a bonus act for the campaign and all multiplayer modes.
Development and Cross-Platform Play
The Coalition, an Xbox studio specializing in Gears of War, collaborated with Sumo Interactive and Disbelief to develop the remaster. The game allows for co-op play with a friend, either online or in split-screen mode. It also features cross-play for all platforms, supporting up to eight players in versus multiplayer mode. If players sign in with a Microsoft account, they can enable cross-progression, allowing them to continue their game on other platforms, including Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Visual and Performance Enhancements
Gears of War: Reloaded boasts various enhancements, including 4K HDR visuals, 60 fps in the campaign, and 120 fps in multiplayer modes. It also supports Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and other visual, audio, and performance upgrades. Notably, the campaign will feature zero loading screens, providing a seamless gaming experience.
Upcoming Projects
The Coalition has another Gears of War project in development, Gears of War: E-Day, which was announced during the Xbox Games Showcase last June. People Can Fly, the studio behind Outriders, is co-developing the game, although a release window has not been announced yet.
