The highly anticipated sequel to the Y2K era Disney comedy, Freaky Friday, is set to reunite Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis as the mother-daughter duo who switch bodies. However, fans should not expect a cameo from Jodie Foster, the star of the original 1976 film, as she has declined the offer. Despite the efforts of the film’s director, Nisha Ganatra, Foster will not be appearing in Freakier Friday.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ganatra revealed that the team had tried to persuade Foster to make a cameo, but she ultimately turned them down. The reason for her decision remains unknown, as Ganatra stated that she “never found out why.”

The 2003 remake, which starred Lohan and Curtis, did not heavily reference the original 1976 film, so a Foster cameo might have felt out of place. According to Ganatra, if Stephen Tobolowsky, who played Mr. Bates in the 2003 film, had been unavailable to reprise his role, they had considered casting Foster as the school principal.

Ganatra explained that the team had explored various options, saying “Honestly, we tried everything. We were like, ‘What about this?'” Nevertheless, Foster declined the offer. However, Julia Butters, who plays the role of Lohan’s daughter, pays homage to Foster with a performance that captures the “fun, amused, cool vibes” inspired by Foster’s portrayal of the character.

Forcing a Foster cameo into the film might have made Freakier Friday feel overcrowded. The story follows Anna, played by Lohan, as she navigates a significant life change, with her mother Tess, played by Curtis, now a grandmother to Anna’s teenage daughter. The film centers around Anna’s wedding to a fellow single parent, played by Manny Jacinto, and the chaos that ensues when their families come together, complete with the return of the body-swapping antics.

Freakier Friday is scheduled to release on August 8.
