OpenAI has announced an upgrade to ChatGPT’s “memory” capabilities.
The company has released a changelog and updated its support and memory FAQ pages, introducing the new “Memory with Search” feature. This allows ChatGPT to draw on past conversations, such as a user’s favorite foods, to inform its web searches.
The latest ChatGPT release notes, updated on April 16, 2025, include the addition of o3 and o4-mini, as well as the new “Memory with Search” feature. However, it’s unclear when this feature will be rolled out to all users. pic.twitter.com/oVBcJNqf6z

This update comes shortly after OpenAI enhanced ChatGPT’s memory capabilities, allowing it to reference a user’s entire chat history. This move appears to be part of OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to differentiate ChatGPT from rival chatbots, such as Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini, which also offers a memory feature.
According to OpenAI’s documentation, when “Memory with Search” is enabled, ChatGPT will use relevant information from past conversations to improve its web searches. For example, if ChatGPT knows a user is vegan and lives in San Francisco, it may rewrite a prompt like “what are some restaurants near me that I’d like” as “good vegan restaurants, San Francisco”.
Users can disable “Memory with Search” by disabling the memory feature in ChatGPT’s settings menu. However, it’s unclear which users have access to this feature, as some reports on X suggest it has already been rolled out to certain accounts.
