Nearly three decades have passed since it was first published, and now, Hisao Tamaki’s iconic interpretation of A New Hope is being revived as part of a lavish new artbook that celebrates Star Wars‘ history with Japanese comics.

Star Wars Celebration Japan, Dark Horse has confirmed the upcoming release of The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope โ€“ The Manga, a two-volume collection set to launch next year. This collection will showcase Tamaki’s renowned artwork from newly acquired scans of his original storyboards, along with a brand-new English-language translation. Prior to its release, Dark Horse will be launching its first-ever Kickstarter campaign to take orders for exclusive editions of the book, including a collector’s variant that won’t be available in retail stores.

Prior to the retail release, the Kickstarter campaign for The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope โ€“ The Manga will offer readers the opportunity to access two exclusive editions: a Collector’s Edition, which will be identical to the standard retail release but with unique variant covers available only through Kickstarter, and a Masterpiece Edition that will be exclusively available through the Kickstarter campaign. In addition to reprinting Tamaki’s work in two volumes at its original size, the Masterpiece Edition will include a third auxiliary volume, providing further insight into the unique intersection of Star Wars and Japanese culture.

The pre-launch page for The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope โ€“ The Manga Kickstarter campaign is now available for fans to follow. The standard retail release of the collection is scheduled to hit comic book stores and bookshops starting summer 2026.
