For fans eagerly awaiting Star Wars movie updates beyond The Mandalorian & Grogu, there’s exciting news. At Star Wars Celebration Japan, Lucasfilm revealed that the next theatrical release after Mando will be titled Star Wars: Starfighter. The film will be directed by Shawn Levy, star Ryan Gosling, begin production this fall, and hit theaters on May 28, 2027.

This movie is a self-contained story set a few years after the events of Episode 9. Ryan Gosling expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “The script is exceptional, filled with heart and adventure. Shawn Levy is the perfect filmmaker to bring this story to life.”

Shawn Levy clarified that Star Wars: Starfighter is “neither a prequel nor a sequel, but a new adventure” featuring “a collection of all-new characters.” Both Gosling and Levy made surprise appearances at the event, with Gosling’s mom sharing a photo of his childhood bedsheets, which were themed after The Empire Strikes Back.

Levy has been involved with the Star Wars project since 2022, while working on Deadpool & Wolverine. After completing his Marvel movie, Jonathan Tropper, who collaborated with Levy on The Adam Project, began writing the script. Earlier this year, Ryan Gosling was attached to the project, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy hinted that it would be the next film to release after The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Although the project is still in development, and uncertainty is natural, everything seems to be falling into place. Filming is set to begin this fall, and the release date has been confirmed.
