The Mandalorian & Grogu may not hit theaters for another year, but attendees at Star Wars Celebration Japan were treated to an exciting sneak peek, and here’s a rundown of what they saw.
Slated for release on May 22, 2026, The Mandalorian & Grogu will be the first Star Wars film to hit theaters since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The story picks up after the events of The Mandalorian season three, following bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young Mandalorian foundling, Grogu, as they embark on an adventure too big for the small screen.
Written and directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Dave Filoni and Kathleen Kennedy, the team was on hand at Celebration to showcase the footage, which began inside an AT-AT. The scene shows the bounty hunter and his foundling searching for a target, with the camera panning back through the walker to reveal dozens of troopers preparing for battle. The back door suddenly blows off, and in walks Mando.
In a continuous shot, Mando springs into action, blasting and flame-throwing troopers, and using his wire to take down more. After dispatching around 12 troopers, the camera cuts back to the commander, who lets out a nervous gulp.
The scene then cuts to three AT-ATs, which appear slightly different from their traditional design, with more bug-like eyes. The action unfolds in the rear walker, which eventually explodes and falls off a snowy cliff, leaving the other two to continue their advance.
A character played by Sigourney Weaver, a New Republic leader, describes the scene as “messy” and “very messy” as she sits with Mando and Grogu, who attempts to steal her snacks.
Weaver’s character tells Mando, “You work for us,” as the scene cuts to shots of the Razor Crest ship flying, Mando and Grogu walking with Zeb from Star Wars Rebels, and Mando exploring a dark area, uncovering the remains of a droid.
The footage also shows a bar fight, Grogu swimming, the duo riding a smaller walker under the AT-ATs, and more. Finally, a mouse droid with off-road wheels is seen driving, and through its point of view, Grogu is shown stopping it with the Force, causing it to break apart and one of its wheels to roll away.
The final shot takes place in a crowded area, where a muscular Hutt is present, and Grogu is seen eating popcorn in the crowd.
Starring Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, and Jeremy Allen White, among others, The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to release on May 22, 2026.
