The artificial intelligence company xAI, founded by Elon Musk, is gradually enhancing its Grok chatbot to be on par with leading competitors such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

On Wednesday evening, xAI introduced a “memory” feature for Grok, enabling the chatbot to recall details from previous conversations. As a result, if you request recommendations from Grok, it will provide more tailored responses, provided you have used it sufficiently for it to “learn” your preferences.

ChatGPT has had a similar memory feature for some time, which was recently upgraded to reference a user’s entire conversation history. Similarly, Gemini possesses persistent memory, allowing it to customize its responses to individual users.

According to a post from the official Grok account on X, “memories are transparent,” meaning users can see exactly what Grok knows and choose what to forget.

The new memory feature for Grok is currently available in beta on Grok.com and the Grok iOS and Android applications, although it is not accessible to users in the EU or UK. Users can disable this feature from the Data Controls page in the settings menu, and individual “memories” can be deleted by tapping the icon beneath the memory from the Grok chat interface on the web, with this functionality coming soon to Android.

xAI is working on integrating the memory feature into the Grok experience on X.
