With Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna, taking on a leadership role in the rebellion in season two of Andor, he is inevitably headed towards his fate as depicted in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. However, the question remains as to what will become of the other characters introduced in the series, should they survive the final season.
In an interview with io9, show creator Tony Gilroy shared his thoughts on the potential for Lucasfilm to explore the stories of Andor‘s characters beyond the series. Gilroy noted, “Lucasfilm has the rights to all of it and can proceed as they see fit. After all, we’ve essentially made eight movies over the course of five years.” His description of the Andor episodes as “movies” is apt, given that each three-episode drop in season two has the feel of a three-hour film.
Gilroy further explained, “We’ve introduced a wealth of ideas, planets, and characters, which are now at Lucasfilm’s disposal.” His collaboration with Lucasfilm through Andor has been a limited but fruitful experience, thanks in large part to the support of Lucasfilm’s head, Kathleen Kennedy. “My primary point of contact at Lucasfilm is Kathleen, along with Pablo Hidalgo, who serves as the guardian of the Star Wars lore and ensures that our stories remain true to the universe. I initially met Pablo while working on Rogue One, and he has been instrumental in keeping our narrative aligned with the larger Star Wars canon.”
Gilroy also shared that he has only spoken with Star Wars creator George Lucas once, in a phone call following the release of Rogue One. Despite this limited interaction, Gilroy stated that the Andor team was given a significant amount of creative freedom. “We were essentially given free rein to explore and experiment with our ideas. We would propose concepts, such as having Cassian visit a brothel and engage in a violent confrontation with police, and Lucasfilm would respond with enthusiasm and support. This allowed us to push the boundaries of what we could achieve with the series.”
The second season of Andor is set to premiere on Disney+ on April 22.
