As the United States’ long-term and short-term economic outlook continues to shift in unpredictable ways, reminiscent of the erratic behavior of Eric Cartman-like whims, some internet service providers are now offering multi-year price guarantees to provide customers with a sense of stability amidst the uncertainty. Following Verizon’s introduction of a three-year price lock a couple of weeks ago, Comcast has followed suit with a five-year pricing guarantee for new residential Xfinity customers.

On a positive note, this offer does not require customers to commit to an annual contract. According to Comcast, the following plans are eligible for the five-year guarantee, with speeds listed as download speeds:

  • 400Mbps – $55/month

  • 600Mbps – $70/month

  • 1.1Gbps – $85/month

  • 2.1Gbps – $105/month

This plan includes unlimited data and complimentary rental of the Xfinity Gateway router. However, if customers opt to use their own hardware, they will incur an additional $30 per month for unlimited data. Additionally, although the Xfinity shopping page indicates that these deals are available until June 23, a Comcast spokesperson confirmed that they will be extended beyond this date.

It is essential to note that the locked-in price does not cover installation costs, taxes, fees, or other charges, which Comcast states are subject to change during and after the promotional period. Furthermore, customers who do not enroll in and maintain paperless billing and automatic payments will be charged an extra $10 per month, or $8 if they pay by credit or debit card.

Upon reviewing the terms and conditions, it may seem ironic that Comcast’s press release positions the price guarantee as a means of simplifying the customer experience. As stated by Comcast COO Steve Croney, “Our new price guarantee removes complexity.” Nonetheless, given the current economic climate, any guarantee of financial stability, no matter how small, can be seen as a welcome respite, especially as Americans are increasingly monitoring their 401(k)s and stock portfolios with the same frequency as gamblers checking a high-stakes sports score.
