Lawsuit Against Elon Musk’s America PAC
A former canvasser for Elon Musk’s America PAC operation has filed a lawsuit against the billionaire, alleging that he and his organization failed to pay him at least $20,000 for his work during the presidential election. The canvasser, who remains anonymous for fear of retaliation, claims that he was never paid the referral money he is owed for convincing voters to sign a petition in support of the Constitution.
The Petition Controversy
During the presidential election, Musk’s America PAC mobilized voters in swing states to sign a vague petition in support of the Constitution. Only registered voters could sign the petition, and canvassers were initially offered $47 for each signature they collected, with the offer later increased to $100. However, the initiative was quickly accused of being a paid voter registration drive and/or a vote-buying scheme, both of which are illegal.
Unpaid Referrals
The plaintiff, known as John Doe, claims that he was paid his hourly rate for canvassing but was not paid for all the referrals he made. He estimates that he is owed at least $20,000 and has filed the lawsuit as a class-action suit, stating that other canvassers were also not paid in full. The lawsuit alleges that America PAC owes at least $5 million in unpaid referral money to canvassers.
Response from America PAC
America PAC has responded to the lawsuit, stating that they are committed to paying for every legitimate petition signature and have paid tens of millions of dollars to canvassers. However, they also claim that they have the right to withhold payments to fraudsters. The organization’s spokesperson, Andrew Romeo, said that they do not know who the plaintiff is and cannot speak to their specific circumstances.
Consequences for Elon Musk
The lawsuit may be the latest sign that Musk’s efforts to influence American politics can have negative consequences for the billionaire. His attempts to buy the U.S. presidential election in 2024 were successful, but they also came with a cost. Meanwhile, his recent attempt to buy an election in Wisconsin has failed, with Musk claiming that he expected to lose. The defeat may mark the beginning of the end of his relationship with Trump, with reports suggesting that Musk may soon be asked to leave the administration.
Aftermath of the Wisconsin Election
Musk has attempted to downplay his defeat in Wisconsin, claiming that a referendum on voter ID was the most important aspect of the election. However, the new measure does not add anything to the electoral process that did not already exist. Wisconsin voters will still be required to present a valid photo ID, just as they have since 2011. The defeat may also have implications for Musk’s relationship with Trump, with the White House denying reports that Musk will be asked to leave the administration.
