A recent trend has emerged where individuals utilize Open AI’s ChatGPT to generate images in the distinctive style of Studio Ghibli, a practice that likely should have ceased when the official White House X account participated in it. However, a new development has arisen, as a proponent of this trend shared a purported cease and desist notice from Studio Ghibli representatives, which was immediately met with skepticism by fellow social media users, who deemed it as fake as the AI-generated “art” that inspired it.
Accompanying the allegedly fabricated letter, X user teej took to the platform to justify their actions, stating in part: “AI creators deserve protection, not punishment. Expression is sacred. Imagination is not illegal. If I have to be a martyr to prove that, so be it.”
It is challenging not to find amusement in this response, considering it involves using a program to create AI images that blatantly replicate the hard work and creativity of human artists, including the renowned Hayao Miyazaki and his Ghibli team, by simply typing a prompt.
Although Studio Ghibli has yet to publicly comment on OpenAI’s use of its works, recent remarks from a Gkids representative regarding the box-office success of Princess Mononoke can be interpreted as a response. The film, which is currently enjoying a 4K restoration in IMAX theaters to celebrate its 40th anniversary, has been well-received by audiences.
Chance Huskey, VP of distribution for Gkids, expressed his thoughts on the matter, stating: “In a time when technology tries to replicate humanity, we are thrilled that audiences value a theatrical experience that respects and celebrates Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s masterpiece in all its cinematic hand-drawn glory,” as quoted in Variety. The screenings are ongoing, and more information can be found here.
