Jennifer Salke is relinquishing her position as the head of Amazon MGM Studios, according to a report by Deadline. Having held this post for more than seven years, which is a significant tenure for a studio head. Prior to her role at Amazon, Salke served as the president of NBC Entertainment.

Her departure will not be followed by the appointment of a replacement. Instead, the role of studio head will be eliminated as part of a restructuring effort within the division. In a memo, Mike Hopkins, the head of Prime Video, stated that the company has decided to “flatten our leadership structure a bit.” The studio will be divided into two distinct units, with one focusing on television and the other on film production.

“We will be taking a couple of weeks to have thoughtful conversations with Jen’s direct reports and others to finalize the ideal long-term structure for the Amazon MGM Studios organization as a whole, and we’ll have more to share on that work soon,” Hopkins stated.

Although Salke is stepping down from her current position, she will not be leaving the studio entirely. She will be transitioning to a first-look film and TV deal with the company. However, industry rumors suggest that her departure may be more akin to a termination rather than a voluntary career change. Notably, she was largely absent from the negotiations that led to Amy Pascal and David Heyman being appointed as producers for the next James Bond film.

Earlier this year, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson sold the creative control of 007 to Amazon for a reported $1 billion. Insiders have suggested that Broccoli and Salke may not have had a harmonious working relationship, which allegedly caught the attention of Jeff Bezos. It has been reported that one condition of Pascal and Heyman’s involvement was that they would not be required to report to Salke.

At present, the implications of these developments for the James Bond franchise are unclear, except that new movies are most definitely in the works. Furthermore, there have been suggestions that the platform may be planning an associated TV show to complement the film franchise.
