The social network Bluesky, which is built on open-source technologies and serves as an alternative to X, has achieved a significant milestone by attracting a notable user to its platform. On Sunday, the company announced that former President Barack Obama has joined its platform, marking a major win for the network.

Bluesky’s OOO Rose Wang responded to a post questioning the authenticity of the Obama account by simply stating “Confirmed!”, thereby verifying the account’s legitimacy.

In his initial posts on the platform, Obama commemorated the 15th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), describing it as “a reminder that change is possible when we fight for progress.”

As a highly influential figure, Obama maintains a substantial following on other social media platforms, including X and Facebook, where he boasts 130.6 million followers and 55 million followers, respectively.

However, following the 2024 U.S. elections, X, the platform previously known as Twitter, has experienced a decline in users, with many migrating to alternative social networks like Bluesky. This shift is largely attributed to Elon Musk’s actions on X, where he campaigned for President Trump and promoted MAGA-aligned views. Additionally, Musk’s involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has further solidified his position within Trump’s circle, contributing to the exodus of left-leaning users from the platform.

As a result, Bluesky witnessed a significant surge in user growth towards the end of 2024, with the platform currently boasting over 33 million users and continuing to expand. This growth can be attributed to the departure of users from X, seeking alternative social media platforms.

Other prominent U.S. politicians are already active on Bluesky, including notable figures such as Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Al Green, Gavin Newsom, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who became the first person on the platform to reach a million followers. Furthermore, numerous representatives, senators, and governors have also joined the network, contributing to its growing user base.
