Today, during The Disney Company’s investor shareholders meeting, CEO Bob Iger revealed that the studio, in collaboration with Pixar, is officially developing a sequel to the Academy Award-winning animated film Coco. The enthusiasm for this family-friendly movie, starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Anthony Gonzales, which introduced the world to Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos traditions, remains strong. The story of Miguel, a young boy who inadvertently travels to the land of the dead and embarks on a journey to reconnect with his family, has captured hearts worldwide.
From Iger’s announcement, here’s what we know about Coco 2: “Although the film is still in its initial stages, we can expect it to be filled with humor, heart, and adventure. We’re eager to share more details soon.” Additionally, it has been reported that director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina will return to direct the film, with Mark Nielsen as the producer.

A boat ride attraction based on Coco is currently in development at Disney California Adventure, as part of the Disneyland Resort’s expansion plans. We wonder if the new film might influence or coincide with the ride’s opening, although neither has a fixed release date. Construction on the Coco ride is set to begin in 2026, while Variety reports that Coco 2 will be released sometime in 2029.
The production of Coco 2 is still in its early stages, and we’re excited to learn more about the sequel. Given that family matriarch Coco passed away at the end of the first film, it’s likely that another Day of the Dead adventure is in store. As a Mexican American, I’m thrilled that the film will continue to explore the world of Mexico’s beloved annual celebration of the dead, and I look forward to seeing how Pixar will move us to tears once again. Even now, I still can’t listen to “Remember Me” without getting emotional.
