Google has made its largest acquisition to date, purchasing cloud security company Wiz for $32 billion in an all-cash deal.
According to Google, this acquisition is an investment in two growing trends in the AI era: enhanced cloud security and the ability to use multiple clouds, also known as multicloud. The company stated that the acquisition, which is subject to regulatory approvals, aims to provide customers with a comprehensive security platform for modern IT environments.
The acquisition is expected to accelerate the adoption of multicloud cybersecurity and drive growth in cloud computing by bringing Google Cloud’s offerings and Wiz together, as stated by Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian. He noted that this move will also promote competition in the cloud computing market.
Wiz CEO Assaf Rappaport confirmed that the company will remain an independent multicloud platform after the deal is closed and will continue to work with other cloud companies like AWS, Azure, and Oracle.
This acquisition comes approximately three years after Google acquired Mandiant for $5.4 billion and over seven months after the company unsuccessfully attempted to acquire Wiz for a reported $23 billion.
Google’s previous security-related acquisitions include VirusTotal in September 2012 and Siemplify in January 2022.
