As reported by Deadline, the writers behind the sci-fi series Humans, Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent, are currently adapting Philip K. Dick’s 1953 novella, The Variable Man, for the screen. The production is a collaborative effort between Motive Pictures and Electric Shepherd Productions, the latter of which is led by Isa Dick Hackett, the daughter of the renowned author. The Variable Man tells the story of Thomas Cole, a tinkerer who inadvertently travels through time from 1913 to the future, where he becomes entangled in an interplanetary conflict.

Although the show is being written with a UK broadcaster in mind, there is a possibility of it being released in the US, according to Deadline. Simon Maxwell, the CEO of Motive, expressed his optimism about the show’s potential appeal to US broadcasters, stating, “When you’ve got Sam and John doing what they did so brilliantly with Humans and exploring the modern world through a genre lens, it is something that can absolutely attract broadcasters in the US.” As a fan of The Variable Man and Philip K. Dick’s works, I am eager to see this adaptation come to life and hope that it will be another successful interpretation of his writing.
