Introduction to the Light Phone III
The company Light, known for creating minimalist phones that help users disconnect from the distractions of smartphones and social media, has announced the upcoming release of its latest model, the Light Phone III, scheduled for March 27. This new iteration, similar to its predecessors, features a simple black-and-white display and includes essential functions such as call and text support, navigation, alarms, hotspot capability, a calendar, and music playback. Notably, the Light Phone III has upgraded to a 3.92-inch AMOLED display from the e-paper screen used in previous models.
Upgraded Features
The Light Phone III also introduces a camera and an NFC chip, which will enable future payment tools, expanding the device’s functionality while maintaining its minimalist ethos.
Improved Design and Usability
First announced in the summer of 2024, the Light Phone III boasts improved repairability, with users now able to access the battery and replace both the screen and the USB port. This enhancement is part of the company’s effort to increase the device’s sustainability and longevity.
Additionally, the company has focused on enhancing the device’s usability and performance. The Light Phone III is designed to be approximately the width of most iPhones, making it easier to use for a broader range of consumers.
Maintaining the Minimalist Approach
“The new AMOLED screen will retain many characteristics that people love about the e-ink screen, such as its distinct feel that is much different from the glossy screens of typical smartphones,” explained Joe Hollier, co-founder of Light, during the phone’s initial introduction last year.
As with previous models, customers will have the flexibility to use the Light Phone III either as their primary phone or as a secondary device for times when they wish to disconnect from the digital world without losing access to essential tools for navigating daily life.
Pricing and Data Plans
Light offers its own data plans, starting at $30 per month for 1 GB of data, providing users with a straightforward and affordable way to stay connected.
However, the upgrades and improvements in the Light Phone III come with a price increase. Initially available for $599 for a limited time, the device’s price will later rise to $799, as indicated on the company’s website.
