In 2021, we set a water stewardship goal to restore 120% of the freshwater volume we use, on average, across our offices and data centers by 2030. This World Water Day, we are reporting on our progress. We have funded 112 projects across 68 watersheds globally, and these projects are estimated to have restored around 4.5 billion gallons of water in 2024 alone. Once all projects are fully implemented, we expect they will have the capacity to restore over 8 billion gallons of water annually.
Globally, agriculture is responsible for nearly 70% of all water usage, and several of our projects focus on the critical relationship between agriculture and water security, where solutions are urgently needed. Here are four new partnerships launched in the past year, focused on managing water in agricultural areas within watersheds that supply our data centers and offices:
Assisting farmers in the Maipo Basin, Chile
The Maipo River originates high in the Andes Mountains in semi-arid central Chile, flowing through Santiago before reaching the Pacific Ocean. In the Maipo River basin, agriculture accounts for approximately 75% of total water demand, and the region’s farmers have been impacted by a prolonged drought. Through our collaboration with Agua Segura and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), we are supporting the rehabilitation of a storage reservoir and the lining of an irrigation canal — essential water infrastructure for the small-scale farmers who rely on the availability of water for their livelihoods.
