ByteDance Sues Former Intern for $1.1 Million Over Alleged Sabotage of AI Training Infrastructure

A Rare Case of Legal Action Against an Intern

China’s ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is suing a former intern, Tian Keyu, for $1.1 million in damages. The lawsuit, filed with the Haidian District People’s Court in Beijing, alleges that Tian deliberately attacked ByteDance’s artificial intelligence large language model training infrastructure.

Focus on AI LLM Training

The case has drawn attention due to its focus on AI LLM (Large Language Model) training, a technology that has captured global interest amid rapid technological advances in generative AI. Generative AI is used to produce text, images, or other output from large bodies of data.

Background of the Incident

ByteDance dismissed Tian in August, citing rumors that the case had cost the company millions of dollars and involved over 8,000 graphics processing units. However, ByteDance denied these claims, stating that they were "seriously exaggerated."

Details of the Allegations

According to Legal Weekly, which cited an internal ByteDance memo, Tian is alleged to have deliberately sabotaged the team’s model training tasks through code manipulation and unauthorized modifications.

Response from ByteDance and Tian

ByteDance declined to comment on the lawsuit on Thursday. Tian, identified as a postgraduate student at Peking University, did not immediately respond to emailed messages.
