_Even government agencies like NSDC are transitioning to stronger authentication methods._

For approximately six decades, usernames and passwords have been the standard. However, they have become increasingly problematic. The need for frequent logins, as with corporate laptops, makes them inconvenient. Remembering infrequently used passwords is frustrating, leading many to choose simple, easily compromised passwords, making them vulnerable to cybercriminals.

Fortunately, the password era may be ending. A recent webinar, “Freedom from Passwords,” discussed this shift. Hemen Vimadalal, CEO of 1Kosmos, a blockchain-based identity platform, highlighted existing passwordless systems. Fingerprint logins for phones and banking apps, facial recognition for airport access via DigiYatra, and Aadhaar biometrics for government services are already common.

Vimadalal argued that complex passwords are ineffective. Users often resort to easily guessed phrases, and forcing complexity creates friction for users. Furthermore, advancements in quantum computing and AI will soon render complex passwords easilybreakable by hackers.

The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) recently launched a potentially transformative initiative: the Skill India digital stack. This national registry of skills and professionals allows citizens to publish verifiable digital credentials, such as skill certificates.

NSDC CEO, Ved Mani Tiwari, emphasized that the stack adheres to global privacy and security standards like GDPR. Credentials are backed by NSDC, enabling registered candidates to share them globally with potential employers. With six lakh current registrants and aims to reach five million by year-end, Skill India seeks to empower Indians in the domestic and global economies. Registration utilizes a mobile number linked to Aadhaar.

Developing this secure, scalable platform took over 18 months. Anuj Gupta, CEO of Hitachi Systems India, which built the platform’s cloud infrastructure, stressed the need for rigorous authentication in cloud environments. They collaborated with 1Kosmos to integrate identity-based authentication using biometrics for secure verification.

Nandkumar Saravade, former CEO of Reserve Bank Information Technology (ReBIT), and former IPS officer, highlighted password vulnerabilities and the global need for alternatives. He emphasized the opportunity for Indian talent in the cybersecurity field, citing millions of unfilled positions worldwide.
