New Feature Announcement
1Password has introduced a new functionality that enables users to assign physical locations to their entries. This feature allows the password manager’s mobile app to display relevant information when the user is in close proximity to a credential’s location. The ‘nearby items’ feature provides 1Password customers with quick access to the most pertinent information, eliminating the need to search for specific details or recall exact account names.
Users can add location information to any new or existing item within their 1Password vault. The app has also been updated to include a map view, allowing users to set and view the locations of their items. As highlighted in the blog post announcing this feature, potential use cases for location data include door codes for workplaces, health records at doctor’s offices, WiFi access at gyms, and rewards membership information for local shops.
Given the importance of privacy and security for a password manager, 1Password has confirmed that location coordinates are only utilized locally on the device and are not transmitted elsewhere. The ‘nearby items’ feature is available to all 1Password customers, effective immediately.
