The US Department of Justice has stated in a recent filing that Google must dismantle its complex network of interconnected businesses and services<\/a>, upholding a proposal made by the previous administration.<\/p>\n

The DOJ has reiterated that Google will be required to sell its Chrome browser, stating that this move “will permanently stop Google’s control of this critical search access point and allow rival search engines the ability to access the browser that for many users is a gateway to the internet,” as mentioned last year.<\/p>\n

It is likely that Google will submit its own alternative proposals. In a filing made in December, the company argued that the Justice Department’s original proposals were excessive and reflected an “interventionist agenda.”<\/p>\n

Given Google’s enormous size, the DOJ is attempting to understand how its various components interact and make it less monopolistic. The department has dropped a Biden-era proposal that would have required Google to sell its stakes in AI startups. Instead, Google must now notify officials before making investments in AI. According to reports from early 2025, Google has invested an additional $1 billion in Anthropic.<\/p>\n

The company has provided funding to both Trump’s presidential campaign and his inauguration<\/a>, so it may be frustrated that its donations are not yielding the desired results.<\/p>\n
