One of the most wonderful aspects of animation is that fans can literally own a piece of their favorite movie. In the pre-computer era, each frame of a film was hand-crafted, and these images were often sold as collectibles. While owning a screen-used movie prop or costume is exciting, owning an entire scene is a unique experience altogether.

Heritage Auctions is now offering this unique opportunity through “The Art of Anime, Vol. VI,” a remarkable collection of original animation art from popular anime series. The auction features pieces from Gundam, Pokémon, Akira, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, and more. This particular auction has a special focus on Studio Ghibli, with stunning frames from films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and many others.

You can view and bid on all the items in the auction at this link. Below, we’ve highlighted a few of our favorites. Notably, Heritage Auctions made $17 million from animation sales in 2024, so we’re expecting significant interest in this auction.

According to Jim Lentz, Heritage’s Vice President of Animation and Anime Art, “This is more than just an auction – it’s a tribute to the artistry and vision that have made Studio Ghibli a household name. Collectors and fans alike will have the opportunity to own pieces of history from the films that have inspired generations.”

To explore all 1,200+ pieces in the auction and check the current bids, visit this website. The auction will culminate from March 22-24, so start saving up. And if you have $17 million to spare, feel free to reach out to me via DM for my Venmo details.
