When creating a sci-fi movie set on an alien planet, it’s a significant bonus if the planet in question actually exists or is inspired by a real one. The new film Ash, directed by Flying Lotus, is a prime example of this. The movie follows an astronaut, played by Eiza González, who wakes up on an alien world with her entire crew dead. A fellow astronaut, played by Aaron Paul, arrives, but his intentions are unclear.

The planet in Ash, referred to as Ash, is based on Kepler-442b, a rocky exo-planet located about 1,200 light years from Earth. According to Flying Lotus, the connection between the film’s planet and Kepler-442b goes beyond mere inspiration. “The planet KOI-442, also known as Ash, sparked humanity’s curiosity from the farthest reaches of the cosmos because its air is almost breathable, and it could soon become a place for humanity to thrive,” Flying Lotus explained. “I wanted the planet itself to be a character, adding to the sense of dread while also inspiring wonder and becoming a place that you would be willing to leave Earth for.”

We’re excited to present an exclusive gallery of never-before-seen images from Ash, showcasing the film’s stunning planetary design.

It’s clear that the film’s team put a great deal of effort into every aspect of the movie’s production. The design of the planet and its surrounding galaxy are just as important as the costumes, hair, and other elements. The colors, angles, and landscapes all come together to create a stunning visual experience.
