Google has recently updated<\/a> the webpage of its Responsible AI and Human Centered Technology (RAI-HCT) team, which is responsible for investigating AI safety, fairness, and transparency, by removing references to \u201cdiversity\u201d and \u201cequity\u201d.<\/p>\n

The previous version of the webpage employed terms such as \u201cmarginalized communities,\u201d \u201cdiverse,\u201d \u201cunderrepresented groups,\u201d and \u201cequity\u201d to describe the RAI-HCT team\u2019s objectives. However, this language has now been eliminated or replaced with more general terminology, such as \u201call,\u201d \u201cvaried,\u201d and \u201cnumerous\u201d instead of \u201cdiverse\u201d.<\/p>\n

Google has not immediately provided a comment in response to a request for clarification.<\/p>\n

The revisions, noticed by the watchdog group The Midas Project, occur after Google removed<\/a> similar language from the website of its Startups Founders Fund grant. In early February, the company announced<\/a> that it would discontinue its diversity hiring objectives and reassess its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.<\/p>\n

Google joins other major tech companies in scaling back DEI initiatives<\/a> as the Trump Administration targets what it describes as an \u201cunlawful<\/a>\u201d practice. Amazon<\/a> and Meta<\/a> have also limited their DEI measures over the past few months. OpenAI has removed<\/a> mentions of diversity and inclusion from its hiring webpage. Notably, Apple has defended<\/a> its DEI initiatives by rejecting a shareholder proposal to discontinue them.<\/p>\n

Many of these companies, including Google, have ongoing contracts with federal agencies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
