Recent releases have given us a deeper look into Disney’s live-action Snow White adaptation, including the captivating music video for “Waiting on a Wish” and its acoustic version, both performed by Rachel Zegler. The visuals offer a treat for fans of Disney Princesses, showcasing elements from Walt Disney Animation’s first animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, as well as Gal Gadot’s portrayal of the Evil Queen, the dwarfs, and the prince, played by Andrew Burnap, who may not be the traditional prince with a crown. Here are our favorite Easter eggs and key takeaways from the new visuals.

Snow White’s Backstory

Just as Batman’s origin story has been explored multiple times, it’s only fitting that we delve into Snow White’s past. This particular adaptation weaves together the classic fairytale lore with Snow White’s survival of a treacherous winter, making it a poignant scene, especially for those who have experienced the challenges of the NICU. The lyrics from “Waiting on a Wish” resonate deeply: “My father told me long ago, I braved a bitter storm of snow, Is that a girl I’ll ever know again?” Indeed, Snow White can overcome any obstacle.

Magical Mirror

"Snow
Disney

Snow White’s presence seems to unsettle the Evil Queen every time the magic mirror declares her step-daughter “the fairest one of all.” The meticulous costuming and stunning stained glass crown are noteworthy details. The Evil Queen’s reaction to the mirror’s words suggests a deep-seated insecurity.

Wishing Well

Disney

The visuals from “Waiting on a Wish” suggest that it will serve as the film’s equivalent of the animated Snow White’s “I’m Wishing.” This addition is a fitting tribute, and an earlier trailer featured Zegler singing the iconic high-note vocal progression from the original animated film, which we hope will be expanded upon.

Prince or Commoner?

"Snow
Disney

The love interest in the film appears to be an ordinary person, possibly from Snow White’s kingdom, who might later become a prince through his relationship with her. The scene shows him being apprehended, potentially for breaking into the castle in search of food, as the next frame depicts Snow White offering him bread.

Snow White’s Family Heirloom

"Snow
Disney

In a scene that appears to be connected to the passing of Snow White’s mother, the young princess is given a necklace with the reminder to be “fearless, fair, brave, and true.” This message seems to be lost on the Evil Queen, who is consumed by her own vanity. The necklace has become a beloved addition to the Snow White canon, and it’s already available for purchase at RockLove, a fandom fashion jewelry brand, for those looking to create their own cosplay outfits.

The Seven Dwarfs

"Seven
Disney

Disney has chosen to retain the original cartoonish design for the dwarfs, similar to other magical creatures in their live-action adaptations, such as the Fairy Godmothers in the Maleficent franchise.

Snow White’s Fearsome Adventures

"Dark
Disney

The terrifying trees from the original fairytale have returned, and we’re excited to see the horror elements they bring to the film. This sequence is reminiscent of the old Disneyland ride.

Animation-Inspired Cottage

The Seven Dwarfs’ interior designers have done an impressive job, and it’s delightful to see how the set design was inspired by the animated classic.

The Poisonous Apple

"Evil
Disney

The poison apple appears to be perfectly eerie, and Gadot’s transformation into the old hag is seamless. We can’t wait to see the rest of the film.

True Love’s Kiss

"Snow
Disney

The timing of the kiss is uncertain, but it’s possible that it occurs just before Snow White bites the apple, only to be interrupted or missed by her love interest. Alternatively, it might take place after she awakens. The presence of two ordinary people in the background adds to the mystery.

They Did It!

"Snow
Disney

It’s heartening to see that Dopey’s distinctive diamond eyes have been retained in the live-action adaptation.

Snow White of the People

"Snow
Disney

This scene suggests a more proactive Snow White who doesn’t simply wait for things to happen to her, as in the original animated film. We appreciate that her power stems from her kindness towards all living beings and her willingness to stand up for them. The finale might be quite different from what we know, and the timing of this scene is ambiguous, potentially occurring either before Snow White is sent to the forest or at the end of the film.

Snow White is set to release in theaters on March 21.
