Established last year as part of former President Joe Biden&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/10\/30\/president-biden-issues-executive-order-to-set-standards-for-ai-safety-and-security\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">executive order on AI safety<\/a>, the institute is tasked with investigating risks and developing standards for AI development. However, President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/01\/20\/president-trump-repeals-bidens-ai-executive-order\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">repealed the order<\/a> upon taking office, and the director of AISI <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-02-21\/deepseek-promises-to-share-even-more-ai-code-in-a-rare-step\" target=\"_blank\">departed the position earlier in February<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortune <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/02\/20\/trump-doge-layoffs-nist-aisi-ai-safety-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\">consulted with various AI safety and policy organizations<\/a>, all of which expressed criticism regarding the reported layoffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf confirmed, these cuts would significantly impair the government&#8217;s ability to research and address critical AI safety concerns, which are more crucial now than ever,\u201d stated Jason Green-Lowe, executive director of the Center for AI Policy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/22\/us-ai-safety-institute-could-face-big-cuts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Source Link<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Institute of Standards and Technology is reportedly considering the termination of up to 500 employees, which could further jeopardize the stability of its fledgling AI safety organization.
