The Goonies refuse to throw in the towel, and it seems Warner Bros. shares their determination. Following years of speculation regarding a potential sequel, the beloved 1985 classic may finally be getting a follow-up film.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has enlisted the services of Potsy Ponciroli, known for Old Henry, to craft a script for the movie. The original film’s creator, Steven Spielberg, will be producing through Amblin Entertainment, alongside Christopher Columbus and executive producer Lauren Shuler Donner. While the plot details remain under wraps, along with any potential return of the original cast members, this development marks a significant step forward for fans who have been eagerly awaiting the return of the iconic misfits. Notably, this comes after some cast members denied any sequel plans just last year. However, January rumors hinted at Warner Bros. initiating work on a sequel, which now appears to be taking shape.

The original Goonies film told the story of a group of young outcasts on a quest for an ancient pirate’s treasure, aiming to save their families’ homes from foreclosure. The movie achieved significant success and has maintained its revered status over the years. Many of its cast members, including Ke Huy Quan and Josh Brolin, have gone on to become prominent figures in the entertainment industry, winning awards and leading their own films. In a notable reunion, the cast came together in 2020 for a virtual fundraiser for COVID-19 relief, where Spielberg hinted at having ideas for a sequel. More recently, the cast reunited again in January to commemorate Quan’s hand and footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theaters.

As The Goonies 2 project progresses, expect further updates and insights.
