The deal comes after the iPhone maker reportedly explored \u2013 but ultimately rejected \u2013 a potential partnership with AI startup, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/tag\/deepseek\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DeepSeek<\/a>, as well as with Bytedance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apple initially selected Baidu as its partner in bringing Apple Intelligence to its customers in China, but issues adapting the Chinese search giant\u2019s models were apparently too great to overcome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While China has been a key market for the company, the flagship feature has yet to debut in the world\u2019s largest smartphone market. CEO Tim Cook cited the lack of Apple Intelligence as a driving force behind a <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/01\/30\/apple-quarterly-revenue-increases-even-as-china-sales-decline-11\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent 11% iPhone sales decline<\/a> in China. Domestic phone makers including Huawei have rushed in to fill that vacuum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new report arrives ahead of Apple\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/09\/apple-could-launch-a-new-iphone-se-and-powerbeats-pro-2-on-february-11\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anticipated fourth-generation iPhone SE launch<\/a>. The budget-focused handset has historically been a key driver for iPhone sales in both China and India, the world\u2019s first and second largest smartphone markets, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apple previously <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/06\/10\/apple-brings-chatgpt-to-its-apps-including-siri\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">partnered with OpenAI<\/a> for Apple Intelligence\u2019s U.S. launch. That deal added ChatGPT access to the Siri smart assistant.
