Gundam GQuuuuuuX: A Bold New Entry in Mecha Anime History

Across the last 45 years of mecha anime history, the iconic franchise Gundam has been unafraid to explore alternative riffs on its primary timeline. This includes re-imaginings of its story, alternate scenarios, and heavily inspired alternate timelines and settings. However, the latest entry, Gundam GQuuuuuuX, is perhaps going for one of the boldest yet.

New Information Revealed

A few short weeks after the Japanese release of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Beginning, a theatrical compilation of the early episodes of the series with new material, Bandai and Khara have formally lifted the lid on a series of designs and information about the mysterious new show’s setting. This confirms what has been rumored and furiously speculated upon by anyone poring over snippets of footage over the past few months: GQuuuuuuX is indeed a retelling of the events of Gundam‘s iconic "Universal Century" timeline, from a fresh perspective.

A Retelling of the Universal Century Timeline

What GQuuuuuuX is doing might be more direct, but it is still part of that broader conversation of re-examining Gundam‘s legacy: an idea that’s full of potential, and ripe for exploration in a project that was explicitly announced in celebration of the franchise’s latest anniversary milestone. This approach allows for a new interpretation of the classic story, tackling its premise and grandest questions in a way that is both familiar and innovative.

GQuuuuuuX: A New Chapter in the Gundam Saga

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Beginning is set to come to American theaters in a limited capacity later this month on February 28. The TV anime is expected to begin broadcast in Japan this spring. With its bold new approach and fresh take on the classic story, Gundam GQuuuuuuX is sure to be a must-see for fans of the franchise and mecha anime enthusiasts alike.
