The company’s status page attributed the issue to “Major PDS Networking Problems,” which refers to personal data servers. A message was posted at 6:55 PM ET, and a follow-up message indicating that a fix was being applied was shared at 7:38 PM ET.

The outage has raised questions about the decentralized nature of the platform. Isn’t decentralization supposed to eliminate single points of failure? Despite being decentralized, the majority of Bluesky users interact with the service through the official app, powered by the AT Protocol.

While theoretically, anyone can run the various components of the infrastructure, including PDS, relays, and other parts, few have done so due to the platform’s early stages. However, those who have set up their own infrastructure were not affected by the outage.

The long-term goal is for multiple communities to be built on Bluesky, each with their own infrastructure, moderation services, and client applications. For example, the Blacksky team is working on creating safer online spaces using these decentralized tools.

Ultimately, the hope is that Bluesky will be one of many entities running the necessary infrastructure to support applications built on the AT Protocol. However, in the short term, an outage impacting Bluesky’s infrastructure will have a broader impact.

The outage sparked a rivalry between Bluesky and another decentralized social network, Mastodon, which uses the ActivityPub protocol. Mastodon users were quick to poke fun at Bluesky’s approach to decentralization, with one user joking that their Raspberry Pi-powered Mastodon instance kept running smoothly while Bluesky was down.

Another Mastodon user commented, “nice decentralization ya got there,” highlighting the perceived irony of a decentralized platform experiencing an outage. Despite the jokes, Bluesky’s outage was resolved shortly after it began, and the service is now back up and running.

Source Link

Decentralized social networks are not immune to outages, as evidenced by a recent incident.
