The new model, believed to be a stripped-down version of the Model Y, was initially expected to debut in the <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/04\/23\/teslas-new-growth-plan-is-centered-around-mysterious-cheaper-models\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">first half of this year<\/a> but may now be postponed until late 2025 or early 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This development comes as Tesla&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/04\/02\/tesla-records-worst-deliveries-in-two-years-amid-elon-musk-backlash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sales continue to decline<\/a> in various parts of the world, largely due to an aging vehicle lineup, CEO Elon Musk&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/29\/tesla-takedown-protesters-are-planning-a-global-day-of-action-on-march-29-and-things-might-get-ugly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">polarizing politics<\/a> and involvement in the U.S. government, as well as the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/652164\/tesla-cybertruck-discounts-production-cuts-2024-foundation-series\" target=\"_blank\">underwhelming performance of the Cybertruck<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concept of a more affordable Tesla was first introduced by Elon Musk at the company&#8217;s &#8220;Battery Day&#8221; event in 2020, where he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/09\/22\/elon-musk-at-battery-day-tesla-deliveries-to-rise-30percent-to-40percent-in-2020.html\" target=\"_blank\">proposed the idea<\/a> of a $25,000 Tesla. At the time, Tesla was developing a new platform that would be 50% cheaper to produce, which was intended to power this new model, often referred to as the &#8220;Model 2,&#8221; as well as the company&#8217;s proposed robotaxi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Musk eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/10\/24\/teslas-25000-ev-flip-flop-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">abandoned the idea<\/a> of building a car on the new platform.
