The news surrounding the release of A Minecraft Movie on April 4 has followed a predictable pattern: initial reports of its impressive box office performance were soon overshadowed by stories of enthusiastic audience reactions. As Jared Hess’ film continues to generate significant revenue worldwide, the social media frenzy surrounding the film’s screenings has taken center stage. The term “chicken jockey” has become widely recognized, and Hess is thrilled with the response.

According to Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, Masterminds), the situation is “bananas.” In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he expressed his amusement at the over-the-top reactions, stating, “It’s been way too fun… It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called. It’s funny because I think it’s just literally cheering and throwing popcorn, which is so funny to me that cops are getting called for popcorn. Yeah, it’s hilarious. I’ve seen so many funny videos.”

Although some theaters have issued warnings to Minecraft fans about their behavior, Hess views the situation positively. He told EW, “I’m just glad people are making memories with their friends and families. I’m just so happy that people are finding joy in going back to cinemas and seeing things as a community, as a group of people. It’s like we’ve become so isolated on our devices, and it’s just fun to experience things as a group of human beings [and] it’s fun that they’ve found it in this goofy movie that we’ve made.”

If you prefer to watch A Minecraft Movie in a quiet environment, you might want to wait for its home release. However, if you’re eager to scream “chicken jockey” at the screen, the film is currently playing in theaters. Just remember to leave your actual chickens at home!
