Deepfake Detection Tools in High Demand as AI-Generated Fake Content Spikes<\/strong><\/h1>\n

With the latest artificial intelligence image generation features being able to fake everything \u2013 from passports and college marksheets to restaurant receipts and Aadhaar cards \u2013 with alarming ease, there is an unprecedented global demand for enterprise-grade deepfake<\/strong> detection tools.<\/p>\n

Organisations across sectors like banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI<\/strong>), telecom, logistics, healthcare<\/strong>, education, and entertainment are in a race to find solutions to fortify themselves against an AI-powered surge in KYC<\/strong> frauds, identity theft, fake hiring credentials, financial scams and more.<\/p>\n

Traditional detection methods like watermarking, C2PA metadata, and facial recognition are no longer enough, experts said. There are umpteen free anti-detection tools that can bypass such fake recognition systems \u2013 making it harder than ever to tell what\u2019s real, they added.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI has exposed new threat vectors such as video\/voice deepfakes, fake documentation, etc,\u201d said Ankush Tiwari, founder and CEO of cybersecurity startup pi-labs. \u201cTherefore organisations are seeking lock and protection from day one.\u201d<\/p>\n

While synthetic media \u2013 fake or artificially generated image, text, video or audio \u2013 existed before, it needed professional editors, he explained. AI has democratised these activities with simple prompts.<\/p>\n

pi-labs, which serves central and state cyber agencies as well as forensic labs with its deepfake detention solution Authenticity, is also engaged with large corporates for ongoing pilots to detect deepfakes, Tiwari said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFunctions across the board including HR, finance, accounts, legal, operations, etc will need advanced deepfake detection tools to mitigate these challenges,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Deepfake-related frauds have caused a loss of more than $6 billion in 2024, according to pi-labs estimates.<\/p>\n

A Hong Kong-based multinational company lost $25.6 million last year when an employee was baited in a group video conference where deepfake replicas of key company figures, notably the CFO, interacted seamlessly.<\/p>\n

Gartner<\/strong> predicts that by 2028, 40% of social engineering attacks will target not just executives but the broader workforce with deepfakes.<\/p>\n

Investors predict that the market for AI-driven fraud detection could exceed several billion dollars in the coming years, making it one of the fastest-growing sectors in cybersecurity.<\/p>\n

Ankur Mittal, cofounder at angel investing platform Inflection Point Ventures<\/strong>, said the deepfake detection market has enormous potential.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeepfake threats are rapidly increasing, threatening elections, financial fraud, corporate security, and personal privacy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Deepfakes have become a commercial need more than a regulatory worry, Mittal added.<\/p>\n

Inflection Point recently invested $600,000 pre-seed sum in Delhi-based deepfake detection startup Neural Defend.<\/p>\n

Banks are using AI-powered video verification to detect deepfake-based KYC fraud, said Sumit Singh, chief data officer at Neural Defend, founded in 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cBFSI organisations are deploying voice authentication techniques to prevent AI-cloned voices from tricking customer service representatives. Corporate treasuries are adopting deepfake detection for video and audio calls to prevent hackers impersonating as senior executives to authorise fraudulent wire transfers,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Studio Blo, a Mumbai-based generative AI content studio, is running a pilot for its AI clone management platform Faimous with the country\u2019s top celebrity management firms and modelling agencies.<\/p>\n

It protects clients like Ayushmann Khurrana and Gautam Gambhir from unauthorised, non-consensual AI deepfakes, and also enables them to launch, manage, monetise and track their official clones that can be leased out to brands, agencies, film producers, etc.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe technology has reached a stage where even a 13-year old can create a likeness of a person in under a minute using a mobile phone app,\u201d said Dipanker Mukherjee<\/strong>, cofounder at Studio Blo. \u201cWhatsApp forwards are full of such instances.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mukherjee said scanning the internet for fake images is not enough. Studio Blo uses proprietary and open-source tools to flag each deepfaked image with a percentage probability of it being vulgar, profane, pornographic, political, branded, violent, hate speech, etc.<\/p>\n
