When Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently shared a grateful message on social media, thanking a fellow passenger for lending him a phone charger, it sparked concern among netizens over a potential cyber threat known as “juice jacking.”

Sarma, who was travelling from Delhi to Dubai on an Emirates flight, shared that a “kind young gentleman” offered him an international plug and charging cable when he needed to charge his phone. “Today morning I travelled on an Emirates flight from Delhi to Dubai, where a kind young gentleman lent me his international plug and charging cable,” Sarma posted on X.

However, the Chief Minister later realised that he had inadvertently failed to return the items. “Unfortunately, he disembarked in Dubai while I was asleep, and I couldn’t return them. I’ve just now arrived in Amsterdam and feel deeply apologetic for not returning his belongings,” he added. In his message, Sarma appealed to the passenger, “If this message reaches him, please send me a direct message so I can arrange to return your charger and cable promptly. Thank you for your kindness, and I regret any inconvenience caused.”

While many users appreciated Sarma’s honesty and thoughtfulness, others were quick to point out the potential risks of accepting such favours, especially for someone in a high-profile position. Comments poured in urging the CM to get his phone checked for any potential tampering.

Many felt that, given his high-profile role, the Chief Minister should exercise greater discretion when it comes to accepting accessories from unknown individuals. Some online users highlighted that such actions could expose him to potential cyber threats, urging him to have his phone and even the charger thoroughly checked for any tampering.

A few expressed alarm that someone in his position would allow a personal device to be connected to a stranger’s cable, pointing out that this could be an avenue for cyber espionage. They reminded him that officials like him, who handle sensitive information, are often targets for international threats, making such oversights especially risky. One person even noted that cables, not just ports, can be used to snoop into a device and recommended avoiding charging from public sources altogether.

The online chatter also reflected a mix of disbelief and concern, with some users finding it odd that a person would leave their charger behind without reclaiming it. They urged the CM to double-check his phone for anything suspicious and avoid such actions in the future, calling it an avoidable lapse in judgment for someone tasked with high-level responsibilities.

## Understanding Juice Jacking

Juice jacking is a cyberattack method where malicious USB charging ports or cables are used to access and steal data from a device. The method takes advantage of the dual functionality of USB connections, which can transmit both power and data.

There are several forms of juice jacking attacks. One common type is data theft, where attackers access sensitive data such as contacts, files, or login credentials. Another is malware installation, in which harmful software is installed on the device, potentially enabling attackers to spy on users or lock them out of their own phones.

In some advanced cases, a multidevice attack can occur, where an infected device can further spread the malware to other devices or chargers it connects with. There are also disabling attacks, where the attacker locks the device entirely.

This cybersecurity threat first gained attention at the DEF CON hacking conference in 2011, where free charging stations were used to demonstrate the dangers of connecting to untrusted USB ports. Since then, smartphone manufacturers have included warnings when a device connects to an unknown USB port, giving users the option to allow or block data transfer.

## How To Stay Safe

Experts recommend using only personal charging accessories and avoiding public USB ports or cables from strangers. Tools like USB data blockers (also called USB condoms) can help by blocking data pins and allowing only power to flow. Keeping devices and security software updated also helps reduce risk.

In an era of increasing digital threats, being cautious—even with something as routine as charging a phone—can make a significant difference.

Published On Apr 10, 2025 at 09:16 AM IST

Join the community of 2M+ industry professionals

Subscribe to our newsletter to get latest insights & analysis.

Download ETCISO App

Get Realtime updates

Save your favourite articles

Scan to download App

Source Link

A simple act of kindness on a flight has unexpectedly led to a larger conversation about cybersecurity.
